Social Responsibility

At IIP, creating a positive and inclusive work environment for all of our employees is of utmost importance. In addition, we work directly as a key real estate capital provider to licensed cannabis operators whose products are focused on treatment of medical conditions that millions of patients face. We are energized by the passion of our tenants and their focus on elevating personal wellness and providing an opportunity for patients suffering from serious medical conditions to have access to alternative treatment through cannabis.

Diversity

IIP strongly believes in employing the best talent with individuals who possess a broad range of experiences, backgrounds and skillsets that enable our company to grow and thrive while meeting the needs of our stakeholders and tenants. We celebrate, support and thrive on diversity for the benefit of our employees and our community. Over time, we have hired, developed and retained a diverse workforce that is a key component in our success. Nearly half of our employees are women, with multiple women in leadership positions.
Furthermore, Innovative Industrial Properties is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and employer. We are committed to the principle of equal employment opportunity for all employees and to providing employees with an inclusive work environment free of discrimination and harassment. All employment decisions are based on qualifications, merit and business needs, without regard to race, color, creed, gender, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, pregnancy, age, marital status, registered domestic partner status, sexual orientation, gender identity, protected medical condition, genetic information, physical or mental disability, veteran status, or any other status protected by the laws or regulations in the locations where we operate.
Many of our operator tenants have also publicly disclosed their commitment to diversity, inclusion and equality on their websites.

Wellness

IIP is dedicated to the well-being of every one of our employees. We provide comprehensive health insurance, including medical, dental and vision to the employee and every member of his or her immediate family at no cost to any employee and provide the same benefits across the board to each employee, regardless of title. We are also committed to maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for our employees. To achieve this goal, we have implemented an Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP). The IIPP is designed to prevent workplace accidents, injuries and illness, and to comply with all safety and health standards. A copy of the program is provided to all employees as part of our Employee Handbook.

Education

IIP strives to invest in our employees by promoting continuing education and sponsoring related courses to ensure expertise in our field. Examples include sponsoring commercial real estate, cannabis, property management, legal and accounting courses and more. Our employees are the heart of the company and lifelong learning is a priority at our company.

Community Involvement

IIP and its team members have taken an active role in supporting our local communities through civic involvement with non-profit organizations and corporate donations. Our tenants are extensively involved in the communities in which they operate, hosting events and giving back to those communities. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, many of our properties are located in neighborhoods throughout the country that have struggled economically. We and our operator tenants have invested significantly into these properties, developing businesses that provide for good quality jobs with meaningful opportunities for advancement and providing local authorities much-needed additional tax revenues to fund community needs.
We strive to be a good corporate citizen for our community by supporting charitable organizations that promote local children’s community events and social well-being. We are proud to support local charities through corporate financial contributions, including “Tabletops and Tea” for Rady Children’s Hospital.
More generally, according to Marijuana Business Daily’s Marijuana Business Factbook 2019 (7th Edition), there were approximately 175,000 to 215,000 direct employees in the cannabis industry in 2019, with a tremendous pace of job growth anticipated in the next few years, up to the equivalent of 385,000 to 475,000 full-time jobs throughout the United States by 2023. This represents a compound annual growth rate in excess of 20%, making it one of the highest growth industries for employment throughout the United States.
